OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Oklahoma State Senate voted 45-0 Monday for a bill that would restrict the sale of certain cold tablets used to make methamphetamine.

The main objective of the bill is to dry up the supply of pseudoephedrine -- the key ingredient used in making meth. The chemical is found in common cold medicines.

Under the measure, a person will have to show a photo identification and sign for the tablet form of the medicine. Only pharmacists will be able to sell the tablets. Gel capsules and liquid cold medicines are not affected.

Sen. Dick Wilkerson, D-Atwood, is one of the bill's authors. He said the measure will help stop the spread of meth addiction in Oklahoma.

“Oklahoma was first in the nation last year in the number of per capita methamphetamine lab seizures," Wilkerson said. "We need to do everything we can to stop meth in its tracks.”

The bill, also known as the "Trooper Nik Green Act," honors an Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper who was killed during an attempted meth lab seizure.

Gov. Brad Henry has urged the legislature to send the bill to his desk within two weeks so he can sign it into law.

The bill now goes to the House for final consideration.
